Summary Information:

The Water Management Act 2000 (NSW) (the Water Management Act) provides for the sustainable and integrated management of New South Wales's water sources. It sets out a licensing framework for managing the taking of water and its use in New South Wales. Among the objects of the Water Management Act are provision for:

  • ecologically sustainable development;
  • protection, enhancement and restoration of water sources; and
  • recognition and fostering the social and economic benefits resulting from the sustainable and efficient use of water, including benefits to:
    (i) the environment
    (ii) urban communities, agriculture, fisheries, industry and recreation
    (iii) culture and heritage
    (iv) the Aboriginal people in relation to their spiritual, social, customary and economic use of land and water
