The National Native Title Tribunal (NNTT), the Office of Spatial Data Management (OSDM) and Geoscience Australia formalised a Memorandum of Understanding in December 2004 to deliver the NNTT's mapping data online. The cooperative agreement means that the mapping data which defines the boundaries of native title applications, registered Indigenous Land Use Agreements (ILUAs) and native title determinations will be publicly accessible through Geoscience Australia's website from mid February 2005. This information can then be used for educational, legal and historical research.
The data is to be updated monthly and is categorised by four themes, namely: register of native title claims; schedule of native title claims (Federal Court); registered and notified ILUAs; and determinations of native title. Whilst GeoScience Australia will host the NNTT datasets, OSDM will maintain standardised data licensing agreements. The arrangement permits the NNTT to make use of existing government infrastructure so as to increase the exposure of its publicly accessible native title information. It is envisaged that the agreement will provide a model which other government agencies may then adopt to assist in compliance with the Spatial Data Access and Pricing Policy.
