Local Agreement between the Cowra Shire Council and Cowra Indigenous People

Summary Information:
The Local Agreement was entered into between the Cowra Shire Council and Cowra Indigenous People. It aims to provide a harmonious community within the Cowra Local Government Area and enhance community relations between all members of the community. An Aboriginal Advisory Committee developed the Agreement and is now overseeing progress on the various tasks identified in the Agreement. The Committee is comprised of two Councillors and seven representatives from the Aboriginal community and is co-chaired by a nominee from Council and the Aboriginal community.
Detailed Information:
The Agreement includes a number of commitments agreed to be implemented by both parties, such as:

  • Including details of Aboriginal history in local tourism information;
  • Identification of sites of significance to Aboriginal people using the models developed by Ballina Shire Council and the Jali Local Aboriginal Land Council;
  • Conducting cross-cultural and cultural awareness workshops for Council staff;
  • Conducting awareness training for Council staff on recognition of sites of significance to Aboriginal people;
  • Participating in an Aboriginal employment project in conjunction with Parkes and Orange Councils;
  • Recognising and organising events in NAIDOC (National Aboriginal Islander Day Observance Committee) week in July each year; and
  • Undertaking other initiatives to improve service delivery to the Aboriginal community in Cowra Shire.

    A study is to be undertaken into the rates and charges for the Aboriginal community which may result in Council changing the rating structure for the community.
  • Outcomes:
    Improved relations between Council and the Aboriginal people of Cowra Shire and a better understanding of each other's role and responsibilities.
