Summary Information:
Coal and Allied originated in 1844 with the operation by Alexander Brown of a coal mining operation in East Maitland in New South Wales. The family was subsequently to establish the Australian Agricultural Company. J&A Brown later merged with Abermain and Seaham operations to form JABAS which then merged with its rival Caledonian in 1960. Coal and Allied was the result of this merger. In early 2004 Rio Tinto Coal Australia Pty Ltd took over the management of Coal and Allied.
