The Koori Justice Unit (KJU) operates within the Aboriginal Justice Branch of the Victorian Department of Justice and Community Safety.    

The KJU advises on, and implements, initiatives developed under the Victorian Aboriginal Justice Agreement (AJA) to improve outcomes for Aboriginal people who come into contact with the criminal justice system in Victoria. 

Detailed Information:

The primary roles of the KJU are to: 

  • Act on behalf of the Aboriginal Justice Forum to help deliver programs developed under the AJA.
  • Provide advice to executives, ministers and staff across the Department of Justice and Community Safety on issues impacting Aboriginal communities across Victoria. 
  • Facilitate a partnership between the Department of Justice and Community Safety and the Aboriginal community to develop and deliver justice services and initiatives. 
  • Monitor and evaluate Aboriginal justice initiatives. 
  • Collect and maintain evidence about Aboriginal involvement with criminal justice institutions. 
  • Support the Aboriginal Justice Forum.
