The Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Justice Negotiation Group (the Group) was established to implement and to be the central planning body for the Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Justice Agreement (the Agreement). It is comprised of three representatives of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Advisory Body (ATSIAB), and two senior representatives of each of the following Government agencies: Department of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Policy and Development (DATSIPD); Department of the Premier and Cabinet; Department of Justice and Attorney-General; Queensland Police Service; Department of Corrective Services; and Families, Youth and Community Care Queensland. The Group has co-chairpeople who are drawn from the representatives of DATSIPD and ATSIAB. |
Detailed Information:
The Agreement states that 'the Parties recognize the Justice Negotiation Group as a significant source of advice for appropriate direction on policies and strategies to reduce Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander over-representation in the Queensland criminal justice system'. The Group has the following functions: reviewing and monitoring implementation of the Agreement; coordinating an Annual Implementation Plan; giving strategic advice; planning for allocation of resources; developing links (to ensure coordination with other Government initiatives, including through the other Agreements of the Ten Year Partnership); and being a single point of contact for all other government agencies and community organisations.
The Group reports on a quarterly basis to the Ten Year Partnership Steering Committee (the Steering Committee), which has responsibility for the development and implementation of the Ten Year Partnership. It will also conduct an annual review and report on the progress and implementation of the Agreement to the Steering Committee.
