Nunavik Commission

Category: Organisation
Sub Category:Statutory Body
Place:Nunavik
State/Country:Northern Quebec, Canada
Subject Matter:Self Government
Summary Information:
The Nunavik Commission was created in November 1999 in order to consult and report on the recommendations for the creation of a new Arctic government to represent the needs of the Nunavik. The three central parties to the creation of the Commission were the Makivik Corporation representing the Nunavik, the Quebec Government, and the federal Canadian Government. The Commission has since consulted extensively with local communities, elders, schools, students and other Inuit governments such as Nunavut and Inuit government in Greenland. In April 2001, the Commission presented its report entitled 'Amiqquaaluta - Let us Share: Mapping the Road toward a Government for Nunavik'. It has been distributed throughout the Nunavik region to inform residents of the nature and proposed powers of the new government. Upon conclusion of negotiations with provincial and federal governments, a referendum will be put to the Nunavuk Inuit to ratify the report. The process of creation of the new government, including elections, can then take place.
