    'The Peninsula Region covers approximately 150,000 square kilometres of outback in Far North Queensland, stretching nearly 650km from north to south. It contains diverse landscape including rainforests of the Wet Tropic World Heritage Area, wetlands of the Gulf Coast, and outback plains.

    This region contains two main Local Government areas - Carpentaria Shire and Cook Shire.' (ATSIC website). The Peninsula Regional Council has 12 Regional Councillors with an elected Chairperson and Deputy Chairperson who are selected by the Councillors.
