    Summary Information:

    The Australian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) was established by an Act of Federal Parliament in 1986 (Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission Act 1986 (Cth)).

    Its aim is to encourage increased understanding and protection of human rights in Australia and to address the human rights concerns of a wide range of individuals and groups in society. The AHRC consists of a President and seven Commissioners. The Commission's responsibilities include matters on education and public awareness, discrimination and human rights complaints, human rights compliance, and policy and legislative development.

    AHRC is an independent statutory body. It reports to the federal parliament through the Attorney-General.
