Summary Information:
The Parks and Wildlife Commission of the Northern Territory was formed after the restructuring of the former Conservation Commission in July 1995. The Commission is responsible for planning and developing the Territory's system of terrestrial and marine parks and reserves, along with other land. It manages 91 parks and reserves for conservation and the provision of high quality nature-based tourism and recreational experiences for visitors.
Detailed Information:
The Commission undertakes original research into Northern Territory flora and fauna and implements management programs and develops policies and strategies for the conservation, utilisation and management of flora and fauna throughout the Northern Territory.

An appointed Board of Commissioners has legislative responsibility for the strategic direction of all Commission activities, and includes Government, Aboriginal, tourism, pastoral, scientific and conservation representatives.

The Commission has an annual expenditure of $35 million and over 400 staff. The Commission's operations are split into three regions - Northern (Darwin), Katherine, and Southern (Alice Springs) with the headquarters located in Palmerston.
