    The Awabakal Newcastle Aboriginal Co-op (the Co-op) was established in 1976 and is the organisation responsible for Aboriginal affairs in Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and Hunter Valley. It runs numerous programs which support Aboriginal self-determination. It does so through the provision of culturally appropriate services to the Aboriginal communities of the entire Hunter region.

    The Co-op is an Aboriginal community controlled organisation. The members therefore elect the Board of Directors who are to represent the interests of the community.
