Devolution Agreement (Canada)

Summary

An agreement between the federal and territorial or Aboriginal governments transferring province-like powers and responsibilities to the territorial or Aboriginal governments.

Extended Definition

The devolution process is set to include such subjects as the transfer from Canada of legislative authority, the development of renewable and non-renewable resource management regimes, financial relationships, and human and capital resources transfers. It is intended that final devolution agreements will be consistent with land claims and self-government agreements, and will establish a regime for the sharing of resource revenues between territorial and Aboriginal governments.
